There are different types of earth work equipment which are used for different purposes. Earth work
(earthwork) refers to any process that involves moving a huge quantity of soil. In the construction industry,
engineering, mining, and architectural fields, earth works are always done. To facilitate the job, laborers make
use of heavy equipments and machineries. Typical earth works include making of railways, dams, canals, causeways,
and roads. The required amount of soil, rocks, gravels, and sand used for these purposes usually range from
thousands to millions of cubic meters. Oftentimes, these materials are transported between far locations.
Types of Earth Work Equipment
Earth moving equipment refers to the machines that are used in construction, excavation, and turf works.
There are different types of machines used as there are different types of job needed. Nonetheless, there are
machines that are used in most construction and engineering works and some of them have multiple purposes. They are
also rated as the most common earth work equipment.
Excavator
Excavators are equipment for earth work that is mainly used for digging. They are also used for demolition
during lot conversions. Excavators come in different sizes but they are all use for the same purpose. The size of
the machine is usually tailored to meet any size of jobs.
Backhoe Loader
This equipment is one of the most used earth work equipment around the world as it has a lot of uses which
include digging holes and breaking out asphalts. A backhoe loader is a kind of tractor that has a bucket which
carries the soil or materials and an arm that connects the backhoe to the rear. Backhoes are very important in any
construction work and it is regarded as the most versatile machine among the earth work equipment available today.
The backhoe and excavator are very similar. The only difference is that backhoe uses track instead of wheels (which
is used in excavators). Because of this, backhoes are perfect for unleveled grounds such as an embankment, ground
covered with snow, and an unstable ground. However, vehicles with track are more complicated to operate than
wheeled machineries like excavators.
Bulldozer
Just like excavators, bulldozers come in varying sizes. This construction earth work equipment is
composed of a track undercarriage and a tractor-like body. On the front, a bulldozer has a removable blade which is
used to push away heavy materials. This blade can be replaced with another type to fit a specified
purpose.
Dumpers and Dump Tracks
As the term implies, dumpers and dump trucks are earth work equipment that are used to carry or transport a
huge amount of construction materials or loads from one location to another. They can be driven for long distances
without the truck getting damaged due to overloading. Dump trucks are also used in the manufacturing industry to
transport raw materials used to make different products. Dumpers on the other hand are smaller version of dump
trucks. However, these earth work equipment cannot be used on the road. They are merely utilized to drop items to a
specific area. This equipment has a small cabin in the front where the operator sits. He simply tilts the bin to
empty its contents.
Thanks to our great earth work equipment inventors and developers. Without them, we would have a slow
progress in the fields of construction, engineering, housing, and architecture. We would have no beautiful houses,
high rise buildings, dams, drainage, and water systems and we would be living a very inconvenient and unsecured
life.
