Working hours:

The typical working hours of heavy machinery operators are 10 hours a day, 5 days a week. The working hours may differ according to the amount of work at hand and the working shifts can be either night or day. Sometimes the operators even have to work the weekends, if they have to meet a deadline. A heavy equipment operator has to work for a number of hours straight, so consistency is a major factor that helps in making you a good heavy machinery operator. Generally, the vacation period for the heavy equipment operators falls during the winter season as the construction work slows down during that time and is often terminated altogether if the winter is too severe.

Conditions and environment:

One thing you need to know before you start looking into heavy equipment operator jobs is that the working conditions are tough. You have to work in extreme weather, you have to be isolated from the rest of the team and you don’t get many breaks. Moreover, being a heavy machinery operator means that you cannot be careless for even a single second as that might cause a major accident on the site. You have to perform difficult tasks as a heavy machinery operator which entails that you need to be extremely alert and active when you are at work.

Pay scale:

The average pay scale for heavy equipment operator jobs is from $30, 000 to $ 95, 000 a year, depending on your level of experience and education. The more senior and experienced you get, the higher is the pay scale. Moreover, if you have attended a proper technical education course related to heavy machinery operation, your pay scale immediately rises above those who haven’t had any such education.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for heavy equipment operator jobs, you need both training and education. For education, you have to get enrolled in a proper technical education and training school for heavy machinery operators. Once you are done with your courses and have a degree, the next step is to get a license for operating heavy machines by passing the tests. Once you have the degree and the license, you are eligible for any heavy machinery job. If you are new to the field, you might not get paid very well in the beginning but as your experience grows; your pay scale also increases.
