Excavator Operator Employment

About Excavators And Excavator Operator Employment

If you like working outdoors and like machinery, then you might like working as an excavator operator. Even when the economy is experiencing a downturn, big projects that require skilled heavy equipment operators are still going on. While the housing sector is in a slump and jobs for builders are scarce, there is still excavator operator employment available for the right people.

The word "excavator" covers a wide range of machinery. Basically, it is any piece of equipment that is built to excavate, or dig. In the broadest sense, even a shovel fits that definition, but in general usage, it refers to heavy equipment that can dig fast.

Excavators that are designed for shovelling all have some parts in common. They have a cabin called a "house" from which the operator works. He manipulates the shovel and the arm using a series of levers. The machine can often swing around 360 degrees, even while standing still. This and other related machines are made for digging holes and trenches or for extracting coal and other substances from the land and transferring them to vehicles for transport.

Another type of excavator that doesn't immediately spring to mind when you think of the word is the suction excavator. This basically works like a giant vacuum machine and is very efficient for removing large amounts of loose material quickly. Unlike the bucket type machines, it is continuously removing material. Often, one of these machines will work in conjunction with a bucket or shovel type machine. One will remove the lighter material, while the other will concentrate on the large stones and other debris.

The big excavators often run on tracks or are stationary. You can see these at work digging the enormous holes necessary for building skyscrapers. They are used on mines, in road construction and other projects that require the removal and disposal of huge amounts of material quickly and efficiently.

While it looks like these huge machines are only able to move debris on a large scale and lack the finesse to do careful work as might be required at an archaeological dig, such is not the case. A skilled operator can use even a large excavator to do a number of jobs that require precise and even delicate handling of objects. There are special attachments that allow the user more control over his machine and a good operator can gently shift large objects or scrape back soil inches at a time.

In general, operators work their way up through the ranks, starting with smaller equipment and gradually working their way up to the heavy machinery. The pay that the operator receives is commensurate with his experience, the degree of difficulty of the job and other factors. Heavy equipment operators often "fall into" the job as vacancies become available on work sites. In many countries, they must also go through a formal apprentice training period in order to qualify for a position.

Excavator operator employment offers a good salary to the right people and there are often great benefits, as well. It's not a job for everybody, though. If you really enjoy working with equipment and are mechanically inclined, it is definitely a career worth looking into.
